Change in genetic size of small-closed populations: lessons from a domestic mammal population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ghafouri-Kesbi,Farhad.
The aim of this study was to monitor changes in genetic size of a small-closed population of Iranian Zandi sheep, by using pedigree information from animals born between 1991 and 2005. The genetic size was assessed by using measures based on the probability of identity-by-descend of genes (coancestry, f, and effective population size, Ne), as well as measures based on probability of gene origin (effective number of founders, f e, effective number of founder genomes, f g, and effective number of non-founder genomes, f ne). Average coancestry, or the degree of genetic similarity of individuals, increased from 0.81% to 1.44% during the period 1993 to 2005, at the same time that Ne decreased from 263 to 93. The observed trend for f e was irregular throughout...

Inbreeding depression in maize populations of reduced size Scientia Agricola
Maldonado,Félix Alonso Astete; Miranda Filho,José Branco de.
Inbreeding is a well known phenomenon in living beings and its immediate consequence is the decrease in the expression of quantitative traits, known as inbreeding depression. Selfing is the most common system of inbreeding in plant species; however, little has been studied with other less severe inbreeding systems, such that resulting from small population sizes. The present work consisted of the study of the inbreeding effect on quantitative traits as a consequence of reduced population size under panmixy. Three maize (Zea mays L.) populations were used in this study: P1 -- ITA, population derived from the variety IAC-Taiúba; P2 -- represented by 30 subpopulations already submmited to reduced size (N = 5); and P3 - population derived from the...

Population structure of Brazilian Gyr dairy cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Reis Filho,João Cruz; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Verneque,Rui da Silva; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Teodoro,Roberto Luiz; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the genetic structure of Gyr cattle selected for milk production. Files of pedigree and production were composed of 27,610 animals. The ENDOG program was used for the calculation of individual inbreeding coefficient (F) and coefficient of average relatedness (AR), effective number of animals(Ne), effective number of founders (f e) and ancestors (f a), and generation interval (GI). Individual inbreeding coefficients and average relatedness in the population were 2.82% and 2.10%, respectively. It was observed a reduction in the effective number of animals, especially after publication of the results of the first progeny test. The estimated effective number of founders was 146 and 75 for the ancestrals. Out...

Population structure of Nellore cattle in northeastern Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Barbosa,Ana Carla Borges; Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Muniz,Lorena Mirelle Santos; Ambrosini,Diego Pagung; Carrillo,José Adrián; Martins-Filho,Raimundo.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the population genetic structure of Nellore cattle in northeastern Brazil. Pedigree information was collected from 175,231 animals born from 1967 to 2007. Probability of gene origin, inbreeding, average relatedness coefficient (AR), completeness pedigree, effective population size and generation interval were calculated. Generation interval was high due to the long period of time animals were used as reproducers. The bottleneck effect was evidenced as a result of intensive use of limited breeders over the last years. Low values were observed in the effective number of founder animals (434) and ancestors (427) comparing with the number on the base (175,231) and reference populations (130,038). Generally, the...
